How to Plan For A Productive Week: 6 Effective Tips

Combine a few simple planning methods — three goals, a to-do list, themed days, and more — to make your week organized and productive.

How to Plan For A Productive Week: 6 Effective Tips

I love planning, productivity, goal setting — all of it. This year, I am determined to be super organized and plan my weeks and days to avoid stress and maximize productivity.

It’s important to be specific and detailed about what you want to accomplish in your week. If you aren’t detailed in your planning, it’s easy to not get as much done, procrastinate, and lose focus. This is why I like to combine a few methods to make my week as organized and productive as possible.

So, grab your notebook or planner, settle down, and follow these steps.

1. Make three goals for the week

Even if you have loads to do, it’s important to list three to five main focuses or goals for the week. What needs to get done this week? They can be general, and involve lots of to-dos, but it is good to have a few main things you need to work on. Seeing those on paper will keep you focused during the week, allow you to plan your week better, and reduce overwhelm or stress about the week.

2. Make a to-do list

Now refer to the goals you just wrote. What do you need to get done to achieve them? Be specific, and also write if there are certain days the tasks need to be done by. Don’t write too many things so that it is unrealistic, or else you will get overwhelmed. Organize them by day if that works for you (this is what I do in my weekly planner), or have one master to-do list. A to-do list keeps you clear, focused, and motivated and is an essential tool for productivity.

3. Make an “If time…” list

I love this idea! Create a list of tasks that aren’t urgent but need to get done. That way you can get those things out on paper, and keep them fresh in your mind, but they won’t overwhelm you because you are setting boundaries for yourself and saying, “it’s okay if it doesn’t get done this week.” If you finish all your to-dos and you have time, you can work on this list. It is so satisfying to see all of your tasks out on paper!

4. Personal planning

Also make sure to plan your personal things, such as meals, adding into your planner which days you want to go to the gym, or whatever else. It’s a good idea to separate these things from your work with a different color pen so you can see the difference and feel more organized. Just because the things are in your personal life, it doesn’t mean you should not plan them! You will be much more productive if you take all of the things in your life into account in your weekly planning.

5. Theme your days

I haven’t personally used this method, but I really want to this year. It may not work for you depending on what types of tasks you need to get done, but it could also be the perfect method for you. If you have ever heard of batch tasking, this is basically that: working on all the tasks that correlate with each other on one day, and the ones that don’t on another day. For example, if you are a blogger, maybe Monday is the day where you write all your blog posts for the next two weeks, and Tuesday is the day where you do freelance work. Or if you are a student, allot each day to work from a different class. You will be much more focused, your mind will be less scrambled, and you will get much more done because you aren’t switching from task to task!

Remember those goals from above? Assign one or two (depending on how big they are) to each day! If you want to try this method, write out what you want to focus on each day — and don’t let yourself stray from that main focus.

6. Clean

This one doesn’t have to do with planning, but it is essential that you clean your work space. You will be much more focused, happier, and productive if your space is clean and inspiring. Cleaning is an excellent way to prep for a new week.

Those are a few methods to include when you plan your week! Planning your week is essential for productivity, and these are a few creative ways to do it effectively. I hope these tips make you more productive and organized — you got this! Smash those goals this week!
